CPRE Oxfordshire is appalled at Oxford University’s decision to move students in to the accommodation at Port Meadow whilst serious planning and environmental issues, including concerns over contamination, remain unresolved.

The planning permission granted to the University expressly says that the buildings should not be occupied until a number of important planning conditions are met. Only a couple of weeks ago, Oxford City Council deferred a decision about this because of the need to evaluate the environmental impact of aspects of the development. CPRE believes that until that has been done the buildings should not be occupied and that moving students in would be premature and inappropriate.

If Oxford University were at all serious about seeking to resolve the disastrous impact of these buildings, it would have defered student occupation. The City Council should now use its enforcement powers to prevent student occupation.
