CPRE responds to consultation on Cherwell’s Local Plan Options Paper – have your say

The consultation on Cherwell District Council’s Local Plan Options Paper closes on Monday 16 January. 

At a meeting of Cherwell District Council’s executive on 7 November 2016, members noted the Oxfordshire Growth Board’s decision to apportion 4,400 homes to the district, and approved the Partial Review of Local Plan Part 1 Options Paper for public consultation.

The Local Plan Options Paper examines how the district should accommodate Oxford’s unmet housing needs. It does not set out proposed sites or policies. The final decision on which sites are developed and how many houses they will include will rest with councillors and is subject to change.

The consultation closes on Monday 16 January, so you still have an opportunity to comment!

In its consultation response (see below), CPRE fundamentally disagrees with the figure of 4,400 houses proposed in the Options Paper because:

– it relies on the SHMA which is deeply flawed, significantly over-estimates housing numbers and is out of date;

– it is based on a strategy of rapidly increasing employment within Oxford City which is unnecessary and potentially highly damaging;

– it is not supported by an adequate spatial strategy that takes into account the environmental, social and economic capacity of the county as a whole; and

– the level of housing proposed is not deliverable or sustainable.
