The Campaign to Protect Rural England: Oxfordshire Branch Our aim is to promote the beauty, tranquillity and diversity of Rural Oxfordshire by encouraging the environmentally sustainable use of land and other resources in the county's towns and countryside. We are part of the national CPRE Charity. Please join us in our work, make a donation or leave a legacy. Branch and District Update: June 2010: Anne Kelaart elected new President of CPRE Oxfordshire. CPRE Oxfordshire is delighted to announce that Anne Kelaart, Deputy Lieutenant to the Lord Lieutenant, the personal representative of the Queen in Oxfordshire, has become the new Branch President. Anne Kelaart is an Oxfordshire Farmer and Landowner. Until 2008, she was the Chairman of the Trustees of the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG). In the past she has served on the Executive Committee of the CLA and the Council of English Nature. She is President of the Oxfordshire Country Land and Business Association; Chairman of the Oxfordshire Rural Forum and of the Friends of Dorchester Abbey; and a Trustee of the Oxfordshire Nature Conservation Forum, the Victoria County History Trust and the Northmoor Trust. Anne Kelaart is a Rural Officer for the Diocese of Oxford and a Governor of Ripon College, Cuddesdon and a member of the Selection Panel for the Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust. She was High Sheriff of Oxfordshire from 2004 to 2005 (when her theme was the Rural Dimension) and was appointed Deputy Lieutenant in 2007. June 2010: Lord Bill Bradshaw stands down as President of CPRE Oxfordshire. CPRE would like to take the opportunity of thanking Lord Bill Bradshaw, who stood down as Branch President at the June 2010 AGM, for his many years of support to the CPRE. In his valedictory address he said the Branch would undoubtedly face many challenges over the coming years, ranging from the proposed reservoir near Abingdon to the many wind farm applications currently being made, and that the rural nature of the county had never been under greater threat. April 2010: Christopher Gowers stands down as Chairman of City District Commmittee. At the City District AGM in April, Christopher Gowers announced that he would be standing down as Chairman, on health grounds. We would like to take this opportunity to extend the thanks of the CPRE Oxfordshire Branch Executive Committee and Oxford City District members to Christopher for all his hard work over the past year. It wasn’t an easy year to take over the post of Chairman, since just months after coming on board Christopher was faced with the onerous task of coordinating the City District’s representation at the public examination on the Oxford Core Strategy. With very short notice, Christopher organised a strong and effective working group to make representations on housing, employment, the Strategic Development Area south of the city, the built environment and other matters. Christopher has also done some important groundwork on the Green Lungs Project, a new project which the City District will be coordinating with other interested parties and which will start later this year. The project is designed to map the many green spaces within the city (of which there are 435!), with the long-term intention of linking them up to each other and to the Green Belt, to create green corridors for residents and wildlife. Christopher has also strengthened the contacts between the City District and other local environmental organisations through diligent networking. We are very pleased that Christopher has agreed to remain on the committee and that he will be leading on the Green Lungs Project. June 2009: New Branch Chairman elected at CPRE's 2009 AGM. CPRE Oxfordshire is delighted to announce that Alan Jones, CPRE's Planning Consultant, and former Head of Planning and Development, with Cherwell DC (from 1992), was elected the new Branch Chairman at the CPRE's 2009 AGM on Saturday 27th June. Bruce Tremayne, who has served as Branch Chairman for seven years, was thanked for his all his hard work and support. Alan Jones, now retired, has enjoyed a career in planning since 1972. He worked in the Lake District, Greater Manchester, North-East Lancashire and Cambridgeshire before moving to Oxfordshire to join the planning team at Cherwell District Council. He studied Law at Selwyn College, Cambridge and Town and Country Planning at Trent Polytechnic. Christopher Gowers sadly resigned from the post of Chairman for the City District at the April AGM, so we are now urgently looking for someone to take over the role. The Chair of our West Oxfordshire District will also be stepping down shortly and is eager to hear from anyone who might be suitable to lead this Districts in its work. Besides chairing the District Committee, the District Chairman would be a member of the Branch Executive Committee and thus contribute to policy at county and national level. It would be most helpful if members could suggest the names of anyone who might be suitable to lead these Districts in their work. The initial approach for anyone interested should be via Dr Helena Whall our Campaign Manager - email: campaign@cpreoxon.org.uk or tel: 07766 624990.
